The Belfast Poets are returning!

Steve Holliday had the bright idea of combining Irish Music with Irish Poets and a Darwin tradition was born, so to speak. The Top End Folk Club and the Belfast Poets performed twice during the 2006 Darwin Fringe Festival.

Steve was also involved in the Darwin end of the Love Poetry, Hate Racism global poetry slam in April 2007.

Celebrating Diversity through the Spoken Word across the Spoken World

In Belfast over the past few years there has been a substantial rise in racist attacks on our growing ethnic minority population. We know, through travelling, that ours is not the only city where the scourge of racism has risen sharply over the last few years, whether against Aboriginal people and ethnic minorities (particularly Muslims) in Australia, or the abuse suffered by people from Africa or Eastern Europe in Ireland.

We have always made it a point in our performances and in our promotional material, that we are opposed to discrimination against anyone on the basis of their ethnic origins, the colour of their skin or the religion they choose to adhere to.

We are putting out this call to make international the cry from writers and poets that we must combat racism and celebrate diversity. We are suggesting that the title of such an event should be "Love Poetry, Hate Racism" and that events take place on the weekend of Friday April 20th to Sunday April 22nd 2007.

If you would like to be part of this global celebration of diversity we need you to be able to get a group of people together to put on a poetry reading, slam contest, open mic night or whatever form you most prefer and let us know about it.

We look forward to another gig at the Railway Club in Parap on the 26th August 2007.
