The place is Rochester (Kent) High Street, where every May Day weekend
there is a festival called "Rochester Sweeps". Historically, local
sweeps used to have a day off and some fun! This died out last century,
but was revived in the late 60s - 70s, by a local morris side.
On the Monday there is a procession led by a green man, followed by
myriads of local little boys dressed as sweeps, then by an ever-increasing
number of morris sides of all types. This year there would have been
at least 50 sides represented. They all dance at spots along the half-mile
long high street on the Sat, Sun and Monday. Of course there are concerts,
ceilidhs and all the usual associated stuff. Rochester also has strong
associations with Charles Dickens - the scene of Great Expectations
& various other novels. |

Peter Bate & Tony Suttor
Peter and Tony go 'way back in the Top End
Folk Club, back to the old days of the Gun Turret, back in the 70's
and 80's.
Tony plays a couple of squeeze-boxes, guitar, sings, and has an
encyclopedic memory of tunes.
Peter plays tenor banjo, guitar, harmonica and has a huge collection
on well thumbed songbooks...
Peter, along with Pat Somers (whistles & squeezebox), Fritz Risler
(fiddle 'Penelope' see below), Mike Lane (Guitar) and Sue
Ross (dance caller) make up the Darwin Ceili Band, who played at
some of the dry season bushdances at The Rock.
